Chamber of Commerce discusses land use concerns

The Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has met with the Ministry of Land Use and Housing (MLUH) to discuss recent grievances voiced by the business community.

Held between Marco Francis, Chairman of the SCCI and his Councillors, and Minister Christian Lionnet, the talks focused on complaints that have been raised in regard to the Planning Authority, the unclear process of how commercial land is distributed, and the national Land Use Plan, which outlines the types of developments allowed at district-level.

In detailing the concerns, SCCI called on the ministry to be more transparent in its undertakings, and to have inclusive policies that treat businesses fairly. “SCCI wants to see that no matter their economic standing, no matter how rich or less fortunate some may be, that all businesses are treated fairly across the board,” said Mr Francis.

With Seychelles having slipped by three places in this year’s Doing Business report by the World Bank, falling from no. 77 to no. 80, the Chamber believes it is imperative that extra efforts are made to assist businesses and improve the ease of conducting business in 2014.

Responding to concerns, Minister Lionnet gave an overview of how MLUH was tackling such complaints, and outlined the future roadmap of the ministry. The two sides have also agreed to hold regular discussions on how they can continue to reduce hurdles in the way of the private sector.
